EMM386 Errors Starting Japanese Windows 95 or Windows 98 Guest Operating System

Details

When my Japanese Windows 95 or Windows 98 guest operating system starts, I get an error message that refers to EMM386. What is wrong?

Solution

You may get a message that says

EMM386 not installed - unable to set page frame base address.

Press any key when ready...

If you press a key or simply wait until the boot process resumes, you see a message that begins

EMM386 successfully installed.

Expanded memory services unavailable.

To avoid these messages, modify your config.sys file to prevent activation of expanded memory services.

  1. Use a text editor such as Notepad to open C:\config.sys.
  2. Modify the line

    DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM

    Change it to

    DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM NOEMS
