Application Error at Startup on Some Cyrix CPU Models

Details

An error occurs when I try to start a virtual machine on a host computer with a Cyrix CPU. What is wrong?

Solution

On certain CPUs, the VMware software may encounter an application error almost immediately upon powering up a virtual machine. The problem is that older Cyrix CPUs, including the 5x86 and at least some of the 6x86 models, don't include the RDTSC instruction, which Intel introduced with the original Pentium. VMware software will not run on a CPU that doesn't include RDTSC.

Note: VMware does not support running VMware products on hosts that use Cyrix processors.
