Connection Error When Using vmware-cmd in the Service Console

Details

Why do I get a connection lost error when I use vmware-cmd?

Solution

You may receive a connection error when you use the vmware-cmd command in the Service Console. This usually occurs when the network connection for the Service Console has failed and you are accessing the Service Console directly through the physical console of your server. In this case, you log on directly and use vmware-cmd to safely suspend your virtual machines, then follow the procedures in Knowledge Base Article 1010 to reestablish the network connection.

You may encounter the connection error VMControl error -13: connection lost while attempting to usevmware-cmd. This occurs if you have installed and enabled the ypbind utility, which is not a standard part of ESX Server; it occurs because ypbind interferes with vmware-cmd.

You can avoid this error by shutting down the ypbind utility:

  1. Log onto the Service Console as root.
  2. Enter the command:
    # /etc/rc.d/init.d/ypbind stop
You should now be able to use vmware-cmd without encountering the connection error.
