Resetting the HTTP Session Timeout and Regenerating the SSL Certificate After Upgrading ESX Server

Details

I upgraded to a newer version of ESX Server and lost my HTTP session timeout settings. How do I reset the timeout value and regenerate the SSL server certificate?

Solution

After upgrading ESX Server, the HTTP session timeout value resets to the default idle time value of 60 minutes. For ESX Server, this setting can be specified by running the management interface configuration program vmware-config-mui.pl. The vmware-config-mui.pl script lets you choose the number of minutes before an HTTP session times out.

To change the timeout value, please follow the steps below.

  1. Log onto the ESX Server service console as root.
  2. Enter the script:
    vmware-config-mui.pl
  3. At the prompt, enter the number of minutes and press Enter. The SSL server certificate is generated and a confirmation message appears.
  4. To restart the VMware Management Interface, enter:
    /etc/init.d/httpd.vmware start
