VirtualCenter Cannot Connect to Remote SQL Server Database
Details
Unable to connect to the SQL database on remote system.
Bad username/password.
Solution
This error might occur if, during installation of VirtualCenter,Windows authentication was selected for the ODBC connection.
VirtualCenter 1.1 documentation doesn't mention that configuring VirtualCenter to use an ODBC connection with Windows authentication is not supported.
If ODBC connection with Windows authentication was selected during installation, you must reinstall VirtualCenter Server and select ODBC connection using SQL authentication.
To set up an ODBC connection and configure VirtualCenter to use SQL authentication:
- On the machine where VirtualCenter Server will be reinstalled, follow the steps in the VirtualCenter 1.1 User's Manual (in the section "Configuring a SQL Server ODBC Connection") to configure and test an ODBC connection to the SQL Server database. For details, see http://www.vmware.com/support/vc11/doc/c2prepvcdb.html.
- In the ODBC data source administrator, select the SQL Server authentication option when configuring the system DSN.
- Provide a SQL user ID and password with Database Operator (DBO) access to the database created on SQL Server.
- Uninstall the current instance of VirtualCenter Server.
- Install VirtualCenter and choose SQL authentication as the authentication type.
- Choose the system DSN created in step 1.
- Proceed with the rest of the VirtualCenter installation.
