Error: "- stop: failed - are you running a virtual machine?"

Details

On a Linux host, I get the message "- stop: failed - are you running a virtual machine?"

Solution

If you have Workstation installed, you must shutdown any running virtual machines before running the vmware-install.pl script. If you cannot locate any virtual machines running on your system, be sure there are no loadable modules in use by the operating system with names that begin with vmmon or vmnet. To do this, become root (su) and run the lsmod(1) command to list the modules presently loaded in the operating system. install.pl assumes that loadable modules with these names are part of the Workstation software package. If you have modules with these names that are not from Workstation, please submit a support request at www.vmware.com/requestsupport.
