Details

Resolved Issues

This patch addresses the following issues:

  • Virtual machines running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, Update 5 (RHEL3 U5) can become unresponsive, requiring a PID kill of the virtual machine.
  • Installation of 64-bit guest operating systems can stop responding before the installation completes.
  • Some virtual machines running 64-bit guest operating systems can experience unexpected panics during operation.

Solution

Applicability

This patch is for ESX Server 3.0.1 only. For the related patch for ESX Server 3.0.0, refer to http://kb.vmware.com/kb/3083826.

Download and Extraction Instructions

Download patch ESX-1410076 from http://www.vmware.com/download/vi/vi3_patches.html.

Proceed as follows to extract the patch:

  1. Log into the ESX Server service console as root.

  2. Create a local depot directory.

    # mkdir /var/updates

Note: VMware recommends that you use the updates directory.

  3. Change your working directory to /var/updates.

    # cd /var/updates

  4. Download the tar file into the /var/updates directory.

  5. Verify the integrity of the downloaded tar file.

    # md5sum ESX-1410076.tgz

The md5 checksum output should match the following:

    7208b58046546b11593a38e5ce9f23b8 ESX-1410076.tgz

  6. Extract the compressed tar archive:

    # tar -xvzf ESX-1410076.tgz

  7. Change to the newly created directory, /var/updates/<patch number>:

    # cd ESX-1410076

Installation Instructions

Note: The patch updates the vmkernel. This process requires you to reboot the ESX Server host.

If you are in the directory you created above, you can now install the update using the following command:

# esxupdate update

If you want to run esxupdate from a different directory, you must specify the bundle path in the command:

# esxupdate -r file:<directory>/ESX-1410076 update

For example, if the host is called depot, use the command:

# esxupdate –r file:///depot/var/updates/ESX-1410076 update

During the update process, logs appear on the terminal. You can specify the verbosity of esxupdate logs by using the -v option as shown below:

# esxupdate -v 10 -r file:<directory>/ESX-1410076 update

For more information on using esxupdate, refer to the Patch Management for ESX Server 3 tech note at http://www.vmware.com/pdf/esx3_esxupdate.pdf.
