Collecting diagnostic information for VirtualCenter 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2

Details

VMware Technical Support routinely request diagnostic information from you when a support request is handled. This diagnostic information contains product specific logs and configuration files from the host on which the product is run. The information is gathered using a specific script or tool for each product.

This article provides procedures for obtaining diagnostic information for VMware VirtualCenter 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2.

The diagnostic information collected can then be uploaded to VMware Technical Support. To uniquely identify your information, use the Support Request (SR) number you received when you opened your Support Request.

Solution

This article provides instructions for users of VirtualCenter versions 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2.

VirtualCenter provides a script which collects log information useful to VMware Technical Support.

Follow these steps to use the script and collect the relevant files:

  1. Log onto the machine running VirtualCenter Server, using a local Windows administrator account, and open a command prompt window.
  2. Change to the directory where VirtualCenter is installed. It is typically found in:

    c:\Program Files\Vmware\Vmware VirtualCenter

  3. Run the log collector command to collect the logs:

    cscript vclogs.wsf /n:all /o:CCLogs.txt

  4. You also need to collect two installation log files, vmmsi.log and vminst.log. They are typically located in:

    c:\documents and settings\administrator\local settings\temp\

  5. Export the application, system and security logs from the Windows Event Viewer as .evt files.
