Advanced NAT Configuration Supplement: Config Port and Allow Any OUI

Details

How do I use the VMware NAT settings Allow any OUI and Config Port?

Solution

On Windows hosts, you access these settings for the VMware Network Address Translation virtual network device from the Edit menu.

  1. Choose Edit > Virtual Network Settings.
  2. Click the NAT tab.
  3. Click the Edit button.
  4. Select the Allow any OUI check box or type in the Config port text box.
  5. Click OK twice to apply the change and exit.

On Linux hosts, you access these settings by editing the /etc/vmware/vmnet8/nat/nat.conf file and changing the values of configport and allowAnyOUI.

  1. Set the value of configport to the desired port number, or comment out the line to disable configport.
  2. Set the value of allowAnyOUI to 1 to enable it, or 0 to disable it.
  3. Exit the file, saving changes.
  4. Restart the VMware services.
    /etc/init.d/vmware restart

You should enable the AllowAnyOUI option when you have changed the OUI (Organizationally Unique Identifier) portion of the MAC address for the virtual machine and subsequently cannot use NAT with the virtual machine.

The ConfigPort can be used to access status information about the NAT. This option is primarily used during troubleshooting sessions with a VMware technical support representative. To enable it, specify an available port number as the value.
