Using /proc/vmware Nodes

Details

What are the nodes under /proc/vmware used for?

Solution

The /proc virtual file system is an area in which the service console can store configuration and status information specific to the operating system; the service console uses /proc in the same manner that Linux systems do.

In this virtual file system, VMware ESX Server creates additional nodes specific to the VMkernel. These nodes are unsupported, but are often useful for troubleshooting ESX Server installations or modifying VMkernel configuration.

ESX Server may create a variety of nodes in the /proc/vmware directory related to system status and configuration. There is no fixed hierarchy of nodes, and the organization often changes from one release to the next.

VMware extensions to the /proc file system are intended primarily for internal use. Customers should use these nodes only under the direction of a VMware Technical Support representative.
