Configuring the Virtual Machine to Burn and Rip CDs

Details

When I try to burn a CD-ROM or rip music files from a CD, the software I am using in the virtual machine hangs. Is there any way to work around this problem?

Solution

In most cases, you can use standard software for burning and ripping CDs without taking any special steps. In rare cases, you may encounter problems. This article suggests configuration settings that may help you work around the problems. This article applies to VMware Workstation 4.5.

Check the settings for the virtual CD-ROM drive (VM>Settings>CD-ROM). Be sure that Legacy emulation is not selected.

Also check the settings for the virtual device node. In most problem cases, it is best to connect a physical IDE drive to an IDE virtual device node, and a physical SCSI drive to a SCSI virtual device node.

If you try these settings and still encounter problems, you may be able to resolve them by connecting a physical IDE drive to a SCSI virtual device node.
