Error "Archive contains obsolescent base-64 headers" Occurs When Extracting a Tar File

Details

Running the command tar -xvzf on an ESX Server host can cause the following errors to occur:

tar: This does not look like a tar archive
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Archive contains obsolescent base-64 headers
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors running installer

Solution

The tar file may be corrupt. Try the following:
  • You might be able to run a checksum on the file. If you downloaded the file from a Web site, that site may contain information about the checksum.

  • You might have transferred the file to your ESX Server machine using FTP not in binary mode.  If so, transfer the file again using FTP in binary mode.
