Error "Archive contains obsolescent base-64 headers" Occurs When Extracting a Tar File
Details
Running the command tar -xvzf on an ESX Server host can cause the following errors to occur:
tar: This does not look like a tar archive
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Archive contains obsolescent base-64 headers
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors running installer
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors running installer
Solution
The tar file may be corrupt. Try the following:

You might be able to run a checksum on the file. If you downloaded the file from a Web site, that site may contain information about the checksum.

You might have transferred the file to your ESX Server machine using FTP not in binary mode. If so, transfer the file again using FTP in binary mode.
