CD-ROM media change not noticed on a Windows XP host

Details

When I change discs in the CD/DVD drive of my Windows XP host, the change is not noticed by my Windows guest operating system. Can I work around this?

Solution

To force the guest operating system to recognize a CD/DVD drive:
  1. Insert a CD or DVD into the host CD drive.

Note: Ensure that the virtual machines CD device is mapped to use the correct host CD/DVD drive.

  2. Click VM > Removable Devices > CD/DVD > Disconnect.
  3. Click VM > Removable Devices > CD/DVD > Connect.

Note: VMware only supports VMware Server on host servers running Windows. However, VMware recognizes that you may be evaluating VMware Server on a non-server host.
