Leaving Full Screen Mode Causes Host's X Server to Restart (1177)

Details

I switched my virtual machine into full screen mode. When I tried to switch back to normal mode, the X server on my Linux host operating system restarted. Why does this happen?

Solution

This problem can occur with display adapters that are not well supported in XFree86. If the driver for the adapter does not correctly implement the XFree86 Direct Graphics Architecture (DGA), you may be able to enter full screen mode but not return to normal mode afterward. We have seen this problem on Linux hosts that use video adapters based on i8xx-series chips. If you encounter this problem on your Linux host computer, you should not run virtual machines in full screen mode.
