Creating a .dsk File Smaller than 1 MB Results in a vmware-authd Error Message

Details

I am getting an error message: "Unexpected response from vmware-authd: 511-The process exited with an error: VMServerd Panic: NOT_IMPLEMENTED F(4311):132 511". What is wrong?

Solution

ESX Server 2 does not support .dsk files on VMFS partitions that are smaller than 1MB. If one is accidentally created the MUI and vmware-command will return the following error: Unexpected response from vmware-authd: 511-The process exited with an error: VMServerd Panic: NOT_IMPLEMENTED F(4311):132 511 End of error message To return the MUI and vmware-cmd to their functional state, first boot to the Service Console OS. Then, the .dsk file that was created must be deleted. Once this is done, the MUI should be restarted. To restart the MUI execute the following command as the root user: /etc/init.d/httpd.vmware restart
