Powering on a virtual machine from a suspend state or reverting to a snapshot fails (1038218)

Symptoms

Summary

Powering on a virtual machine from a suspend state or reverting to a snapshot fails with an error.

Example

The features supported by the processors in this machine are different from the features supported by the processors in the machine on which the checkpoint was saved. Try to resume the snapshot on a machine where the processors have the same features.

Impact

You cannot power on the virtual machine or revert to a snapshot.

Resolution

This error can occur if the suspend or snapshot operation was performed on a different machine than the power on or revert to snapshot operation. The machine selected for the virtual machine needs to support the same features as the machine on which the snapshot or suspend was performed.

If both machines have compatible hardware, make sure that identical hardware features are enabled on the the BIOS of the source machine and the new machine.

To resolve this issue bring the virtual machine back to the machine on which it was suspended to power it on or to revert to snapshot.

If the virtual machine needs to be moved to an incompatible machine, use power off instead of suspend and make sure that the snapshots do not contain virtual machine memory or that they are powered off during snapshot.

Note: If you are unable to migrate the virtual machine from host one to another due to hardware compatibility issues, unregister the virtual machine from the host and re-register on original host. For more information, see Registering or adding a virtual machine to the inventory on vCenter Server or on an ESX/ESXi host (1006160).
