Blue Screen Errors after VMware Tools Install

Details

After installing VMware Tools, I reset or powered off my Windows 2000 virtual machine without shutting down the guest operating system first. A blue screen error appeared in the guest.

Solution

This problem occurs only when you first install VMware Tools in a Windows 2000 virtual machine configured with a SCSI virtual disk. It does not occur if you created the virtual machine under VMware Workstation 4.0, so you might consider upgrading if this issue has adverse effects for your site.

To work around this issue, try resetting the virtual machine again. Do not shut down the guest operating system. During the reset, press the F8 key and select Last Known Good Configuration. This lets you boot the guest with the guest operating system service in VMware Tools disabled. Then install VMware Tools again. Make sure you let the installer restart the guest operating system.

To install VMware Tools, follow the steps for your VMware product.
