Enabling SSH on an ESXi 4.1.x host when hostd is unavailable (1033013)
To enable SSH on an ESXi 4.1.x host when hostd is unavailable:
Note: These steps require a local console or an out-of-band access to the ESXi server.
- At the DCUI of the ESXi host, press Alt + F1 and enter the root username and password to log in. For more information on logging into the ESXi host, see Using Tech Support Mode in ESXi 4.1 (1017910).
- Open the /etc/inetd.conf file using a text editor, for more information see Editing files on an ESX host using vi or nano (1020302).
- Remove the # (comment) symbol in these entries:
#ssh stream tcp nowait root /sbin/dropbearmulti dropbear ++min=0,swap,group=shell -i -K60
#ssh stream tcp6 nowait root /sbin/dropbearmulti dropbear ++min=0,swap,group=shell -i -K60
- Run this command to restart the SSH daemon for the changes to take effect:
