FAQ

How do you backup the state.tgz file before the upgrade?

There are two options for backing up state.tgz:

  • The preferred method is to run the esxcfg-backup command from vCLI remotely. (The generated file is actually the state.tgz file)
  • You can manually copy the /bootbank/state.tgz file from the ESXi Shell to an alternative location.

Note: The state.tgz file is updated hourly by the /sbin/auto-backup.sh script. If you made recent changes, you may want to run this manually to trigger a backup from the in-memory filesystem to the on-disk state.tgz file.

Does a user have to manually delete the service console VMDK file after an upgrade from ESX Classic?

Yes. The service console VMDK residing in the VMFS file system of an upgraded ESX classic machine must still be manually deleted. The installer will not delete data on the VMFS volume.

Where are the installation logs located?

The installation files can be found in /var/log/weasel.log or the /var/log/esxi_install.log. After the installation, there files are also saved in onetime.tgz for post-install references.

Which installation script is responsible for migrating the configuration from ESX to ESXi?

The scripts that are responsible are located in the the /usr/lib/weasel/migrate/.

What configuration is moved from an ESX system to an ESXi system?

There are several migration modules built into the installer that are responsible for migration settings from the service console. Information about these migration scripts can be found in List of files migrated during upgrade from ESX/ESXi 4.x to ESXi 5.0 (2005054).
