Solution

Summaries and Symptoms

This patch updates the service console kernel packages to resolve a security issue. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CVE-2010-3081 to this issue.

In addition, this patch resolves an issue where, if a 64-bit Windows virtual machine that uses software techniques for instruction set virtualization or Binary Translation (BT) is resumed from the suspended state or is migrated to an ESX 4.1 host, the virtual machine might stop responding, and the Microsoft Windows Event Logs might display error messages similar to the following:
.NET Runtime
.NET Runtime version * Fatal Execution Engine Error *
Application Error:
Faulting application name: oobe.exe *
Faulting module name: mscorwks.dll *
Exception code: 0xc00000005

Deployment Considerations

None beyond the required patch bundles and reboot information listed in the table above.

Patch Download and Installation

See the VMware vCenter Update Manager Administration Guide for instructions on using Update Manager to download and install patches to automatically update ESX 4.1 hosts.

To update ESX 4.1 hosts without using Update Manager, download the patch ZIP file from http://support.vmware.com/selfsupport/download/ and install the bulletin by using esxupdate from the command line of the host. For more information, see the ESX 4 Patch Management Guide.
