Upgrading to vCenter Server 4.1 fails with the error: Trigger, procedure or function created with PL/SQL compilation error (1026331)

Symptoms

  • Upgrading to vCenter Server 4.1 fails during database Oracle upgrade
  • In the vCenter Server logs, you see the error:

    Trigger, procedure or function created with PL/SQL compilation error

  • You see errors similar to:

    [05/08/2010 16:10:59] Upgrade-v400-to-v410\ORACLE\process_temptable1_proc_oracle.sql create or replace procedure process_temptable1_proc ........ end process_temptable1_proc;
    [05/08/2010 16:10:59] Got exception: ERROR [HY000] [Oracle][ODBC][Ora]Trigger, procedure or function created with PL/SQL compilation error(s). [05/08/2010 16:10:59] Error while upgrading: ERROR [HY000][Oracle][ODBC][Ora]Trigger, procedure or function created with PL/SQL compilation error(s).

Resolution

This issue is resolved in vCenter Server 4.1 Update 1. Therefore, this issue does not occur when you upgrade vCenter Server to vCenter Server 4.1 Update 1. In cases in which you do not choose to upgrade to vCenter Server 4.1 Update 1, you can apply the workaround that follows:

This issue occurs if the vCenter Server databases were originally created by VirtualCenter 2.5. The upgrade fails because the DEVICE_NAME column of  the VPX_DEVICE table is set to an unexpected datatype VARCHAR(255). The expected datatype is NVARCHAR2(255).

To workaround this issue:
  1. Restore the pre-upgrade database from backup.
  2. Unzip the 1026331_modify_device_name_type.zip file attached to this article.
  3. Run the extracted .sql file, modify_device_name_type_oracle.sql, on the database.

Note: DB2 databases are not effected.
