Collecting diagnostic information for VMware vCloud Director 1.x / 5.x (1026312)

VMware Technical Support routinely requests diagnostic information from you when a support request is handled. This diagnostic information contains product specific logs and configuration files from the host on which the product is run. The information is gathered using a specific script or tool for each product.
This article provides procedures for obtaining diagnostic information for VMware vCloud Director.

The vmware-vcd-support script collects host log information as well as vCloud Director logs:
  • For vCloud Director 1.0, run /opt/vmware/cloud-director/bin/vmware-vcd-support
  • For vCloud Director 1.5, run /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/bin/vmware-vcd-support
  • For vCloud Director 5.x, run /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/bin/vmware-vcd-support
Note: For multiple cells and packages, individual log bundles can be collected as one centralized (NFS) bundle and will provide a status report at the end of the report of what cells were a success or failure with this command:
./vmware-vcd-support --all --multicell
If the multicell log collection times out (the default timeout value is seven minutes), you can increase the timeout in the /$VCLOUD_HOME/bin/vmware-vcd-multi-cell-log-collector file by modifying the TIMEOUT_IN_MINUTES value. For example:
# Maximum time to wait for all the cells to complete log generation
### End of configurable globals ###
Set the value to the number of minutes you would like to wait for all cells to generate a log bundle.

When you run the vmware-vcd-support script, it creates a file in the folder where the script was executed from. For example:
This table provides information about vCloud Director logs:

Log NameDescription
cell.logConsole output from the vCloud Director cell.
diagnostics.logCell diagnostics log. This file is empty unless diagnostics logging is enabled in the local logging configuration.
vcloud-container-info.logInformational log messages from the cell. This log also shows warnings or errors encountered by the cell.
vcloud-container-debug.logDebug-level log messages from the cell.
vcloud-vmware-watchdog.logInformational log messages from the cell watchdog. For example, this records when the cell fails or is restarted.

Note: The logs for VMware vCloud Director are located in /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/logs.
