Licensing VMware vCloud Director (1026090)

Purpose

This article provides steps to license VMware vCloud Director.

Resolution

VMware vCloud director is licensed per virtual machine. For more information, see Per Virtual Machine licensing (2014285).

Licensing in VMware vCloud Director is based on the amount of vSphere resources being managed by the product and by the number of powered on virtual machines being used.

VMware vCloud Director notifies customers if they have exceeded their licensed capacity but does not prevent further use. The Count field in the license is set, but functionality is not disabled if you are over-deployed.

The VMware vCloud Director administrator is redirected to the Licensing page if the Serial Number is not set or has expired. The Licensing page does not accept invalid or expired license keys.

The License page contains information about the Hourly Usage. Hourly Usage data is stored in these database tables:
  • LICENSING_METRIC
  • LICENSING_MS_DATA
  • LICENSING_VM_DATA
Note: For more information on collecting hourly usage reports, see Collecting hourly usage data in VMware vCloud Director (1026351).

To add or modify licenses:
  1. Log into VMware vCloud Director.
  2. Click the System tab.
  3. Click the Administration tab.
  4. Under System Settings, click License.
  5. Enter the license key for VMware vCloud Director.
