Configuring Lab Manager to overcommit Managed Server (host) memory resources

Details

Lab Manager does allow memory overcommit by entering a negative number in the managed server's Host Reserved Memory property

Solution

To overcommit managed server memory resources:

  1. Go to Servers.
  2. Mouse-over a server that you want to adjust.
  3. Choose Properties.
  4. Enter a negative value in the Reserved Memory field.
  5. Click OK.
Lab Manager does its own memory management of the ESX hosts, and can be conservative due to ESX's memory overcommit feature. To take advantage of memory overcommit, you can set the Reserved Memory on the Properties page of a server to a negative number.

Caution: If you are too aggressive with this setting, deploy errors occur.

Additional notes:

Best practice is to monitor the minimum amount of free memory you have on your ESX hosts in production with 0 overcommit, to determine the amount of overcommit you can use given your use case. You can then set the Reserved Memory on each host to be a negative amount of the free memory (with some safety margin).
