ESX 4.0 Update 2 Compatibility with Cisco Nexus 1000V Virtual Ethernet Module

Details

Because ESX 4.0 U2 is not compatible with Cisco Nexus 1000V release 4.0(4)SV1(1), the host upgrade to ESX 4.0 Update 2 will fail. To resolve this an updated Cisco Nexus 1000V release 4.0(4)SV1(2)or Cisco Nexus 1000V release 4.0(4)SV1(3) is required along with ESX 4.0 Update 2 VEM module. To download the VEM module, search patches for the VEM product and download the latest VEM Patch Release.

You should install this patch under the following conditions:

  • You have vCenter 4.0 U2 and VUM 4.0 U2.
  • The DVS or VSM is at Cisco Nexus 1000V release 4.0(4)SV1(1).
  • ESX hosts are connected to DVS.
  • You want to update the host to ESX 4.0 U2.
  • ESX 4.0 U2 is not supported by Cisco Nexus 1000V release 4.0(4)SV1(1), the host upgrade to ESX 4.0 U2 fails.
  • You must upgrade the DVS to release 4.0(4)SV1(3) or 4.0(4)SV1(2) to enable moving the hosts to ESX 4.0 U2.

Solution

You can move to VSM release 4.0(4)SV1(3) as follows:

  1. With hosts connected to a DVS release 4.0(4)SV1(1), upgrade the DVS to release 4.0(4)SV1(3). This pushes the release 4.0(4)SV1(3) bits to each host. For details about upgrading to release 4.0(4)SV1(3), see Cisco Nexus 1000V Software Upgrade Guide, Release 4.0(4) SV1(3).
  2. Upgrade the hosts to ESX 4.0 U2 using the host upgrade functionality of the VMware Update Manager. This upgrades each host to ESX 4.0 U2 and pushes the 4.0(4)SV1(3)release specifc ESX 4.0 U2 VEM Module to each host.

You can move to VSM release 4.0(4)SV1(2) as follows:

  1. With hosts connected to a DVS release 4.0(4)SV1(1), upgrade the DVS to release 4.0(4)SV1(2). This pushes the release 4.0(4)SV1(2) bits to each host. For details about upgrading to release 4.0(4)SV1(2), see Cisco Nexus 1000V Software Upgrade Guide, Release 4.0(4) SV1(2).
  2. Upgrade the hosts to ESX 4.0 U2 using the host upgrade functionality of the VMware Update Manager. This upgrades each host to ESX 4.0 U2 and pushes the 4.0(4)SV1(2) release specific ESX 4.0 U2 VEM module to each host.
