Installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or 2008 fails on virtual machines running Windows Server 2008 R2 that are configured in a Microsoft Cluster (1021946)
Details
Virtual machines with the Windows Server 2008 R2 guest operating system as part of a Microsoft cluster prevent the installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008
An error indicating the network address is invalid is issued when you attempt to name the SQL Server instance during installation.
VMware Tools installs the vmhgfs service which prevents the installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008.
Solution
By uninstalling and reinstalling VMware Tools with the Custom installation option, you can remove the Shared Folders component, thereby removing the vmhgfs service. Removing the vmhgfs service eliminates this issue.
Implement the steps that follow:
- Uninstall VMware Tools from the Control Panel Programs and Features.
- Reboot the virtual machine.
- Install Vmware Tools for the virtual machine.
- Select Custom for the VMware Tools installation.
- Expand Vmware Device Drivers to click Shared Folders.
- Select This feature will not be available.
- Complete the VMware Tools installation.
- Reboot the virtual machine.
- Use the command line of the guest operating system to verify that the vmhgfs service is not installed.
For example, issue the following command: sc qc vmhgfs
If the vmhgfs service is not installed, a message similar to the following is issued:
OpenService FAILED 1060
The specified service does not exist as an installed service. - Install SQL Server 2008 R2
Appropriate result: Installation of SQL 2008 R2 successful.
