Error message: Cannot open root device. Please append a correct "root=" boot option

Details

  • You see an error message similar to the following: 

    VFS: Cannot open root device "UUID:048b19c0-9850-4676-8b00-f42a6854427e" or 00:00
    Please append a correct "root=" boot option
     
  • This issue may occur when:
    • An ESX host experiences an abrupt reboot.
    • Upgrading the BIOS or firmware of the ESX host.
    • Upgrading or replacing the physical hardware of the ESX host.

Solution

The initrd file in /boot is corrupt.
 
Copy this file from another ESX host, or log into ESX in debug or maintenance mode and execute the commands: 
esxcfg-boot -p (reloads the PCI data)
esxcfg-boot -b (sets up boot information)
esxcfg-boot -r (refreshes initrd)
