Emulex Driver Connecting to EMC-Symmetrix Can Lose Access to All Storage Targets (10176)

Details

There is a scenario when a bus reset occurs at an EMC-Symmetrix target, the ESX Server host that is connected to the target can lose access to the LUNs.

When a server sends a target reset  with Third Party Process Logout to the EMC-Symmetrix storage, the EMC-Symmetrix sends PRLOs(PRocess LogOuts) to all the initiators that have shared luns as the initiator that sent the reset. After an ESX Server host receives the PRLO, the Emulex driver on that server ends the session and fails to recover the target login.

As Symmetrix volumes such as the VCM and Gatekeepers are often shared amongst several initiators this issue can propagate.

Solution

1. Updated lpfcdd_7xx and lpfcdd_732 drivers supplied with the ESX Server 3.0.2 release enables the driver to recover the login and retain access to the storage. With this fix, connection to EMC-Symmetrix targets will not be lost during a reset.

2.  By default is is very rare for a Initator to send Reset Unit Attention with TPRLO, but as from Emc there is one such case when a Emulex Driver has the default Driver in a Windows system instead of the Emc OEM Driver.  With this fixed the Process Logouts do not get probagated in the first place.
