CPU Affinity Violation on Hyperthreaded Systems

Details

When the affinity setting of two VMM (virtual machine monitor) worlds of a two-way SMP (symmetric multiprocessing) virtual machine is set to different cores, the two VMM worlds should never run on the same core. However, on a hyperthreading enabled system, when Hyperthreading Sharing is set to Internal, the CPU scheduler might still try to place the two VMM worlds on the same core, resulting in CPU affinity violation.

Solution

This issue is fixed in ESX Server 3.0.2, and all higher versions provide for strict CPU affinity checking.
