Configuring the virtual machine on an ESX 3.5 host fails with the error: Error during the configuration of the host: configSpec.flags.cfgVersion

Symptoms

  • Configuring the virtual machine on an ESX 3.5 host running on vCenter Server 4.0 fails
  • You see the error:

Error during the configuration of the host: configSpec.flags.cfgVersion when creating VM.
  • The virtual machine is created with Hardware version 7
  • Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) is enabled and is set to partially or fully automated

Resolution

This issue occurs because ESX 3.5 hosts do not support virtual machines with hardware version 7 and when DRS is set to partially or fully automated, it chooses an ESX 3.5 host in the cluster for this virtual machine.

To resolve this issue, you must either upgrade all hosts in the cluster to ESX 4.0 or set DRS to Manual when configuring the virtual machine.
