Warning for Duplicate IP Address for VMware VMotion Port Group

Details

The VMotion port group for an ESX Server host should not be configured with an IP address that is already configured for a VMotion port group on another ESX Server. No two network entities of any type should ever share the same IP address if they are on the same network.

Solution

VMware ESX Server 3.0.2 or later detects duplicate VMotion IP addresses and generates the warning message:

Duplicate IP address detected.

For example, the following message is seen in /var/log/vmkernel :

Received message 0@vmk_notify_ip_dup:4557: Duplicate ip address detected: mac = 0:50:56:6e:aa:b7 ip = 0x1b99110a

The MAC address belongs to the uplink network adapter for the vSwitch where the VMotion portgroup is configured.
