Upgrading or patching an ESX 4.x host that has EMC Power Path installed prevents the rpowermt utility from discovering LUNs (1016421)

Details

Third-party CIM providers installed on a vSphere 4.0-based host will be inaccessible after upgrading or patching. One example is EMC's PowerPath RTOOLS: the rpowermt command will fail to discover any LUNs after a patch installation.

Solution

Issue the following two commands to restore proper operation of any previously installed third-party CIM providers:

# /usr/sbin/cim-install.sh
# /etc/init.d/sfcbd-watchdog restart

After executing the preceding two commands, the rpowermt command should work as before.
