Connection Problems with Axxon 64-bit PCI Parallel Port Cards on an ESX Server

Details

I have an Axxon 64-bit PCI parallel port card installed in my ESX Server, but the virtual machines cannot use it. What is wrong?

Solution

The Axxon 64-bit PCI parallel port card was not supported in the Linux kernel until version 2.4.13. As the Console OS (Service Console) is based on verion 2.4.9 of the Linux kernel, an update to the parallel port kernel modules is necessary in order to use this device. This update is available in ESX Server 1.5.2 patch 3 and later. Patch 3 for ESX Server is currently available at our download site. Documentation on how to load parallel port drivers is available in the ESX Server release notes: www.vmware.com/support/esx15/doc/releasenotes_esx152.html#parallel
