Mouse movement is erratic when VMware Tools is installed on Windows NT 4 Japanese version for the first time

Symptoms

After installing VMware Tools on Windows NT 4 Japanese for the first time, you may experience these symptoms:

  • Mouse movement is delayed or erratic.
  • The file vmmouse.sys is not installed.
  • The Mouse Property in Control Panel shows VMware Pointing Device, but Devices in the Control Panel shows i8042 Keyboard and PS/2 mouse port driver and VMware Pointing Device.
  • Reinstalling VMware Tools with the Change option and rebooting does not resolve this issue.

Resolution

This issue may occur if VMware Tools installer fails to install the mouse driver.

To workaround this issue, perform a reinstall VMware Tools with the Repair option, then reboot.

After a reinstall and reboot, Devices in the Control Panel only shows VMware Pointing Device and mouse movement is normal.
