Using vCenter Update Manager to patch ESX/ESXi hosts added to Cisco Nexus 1000V DVS

Details

Host patches that update the ESX kernel are accompanied by compatible Cisco Nexus 1000V Virtual Ethernet Module (VEM) patches. For an ESX/ESXi host that is added to Cisco Nexus 1000V DVS, the host patching operation might fail in either of the following scenarios:
  • The corresponding Cisco VEM patch is not included in the patch baseline.
  • Only the Cisco VEM patch is included in the patch baseline.

Solution

To patch ESX/ESXi hosts added to Cisco Nexus 1000V DVS:
  1. Add the host patch bulletin containing VMkernel or firmware to a host patch baseline.
  2. Add the corresponding Cisco VEM patch to the same host patch baseline.
  3. Stage and remediate the baseline.
If the ESX/ESXi host is not added to Cisco Nexus 1000V DVS, do not include the Cisco VEM patch in the host patch baseline.
