Upgrading an ESX host with VEM400-200909001-BG installed fails if host is part of DVS
Details
Solution
The issue has been fixed in new releases of Cisco Nexus 1000V, but hosts at this level will need to implement a workaround to move past this bulletin level.
To workaround the issue:
- Shutdown or migrate all virtual machines on the host.
- Login to the host as root.
- Run the hotswap.sh shell script:
hotswap.sh -u
This will cause traffic to be dropped for all VMs and pnics on the switch.
Once this is done, you can then apply a newer offline bulletin or use VUM to remediate a baseline with a newer bulletin.
If you have already attempted to load a new bulletin past VEM400-200909001-BG and your host is in an inconsistent state, recover as follows:
- Shutdown or migrate all virtual machines on the host.
- Reboot the host.
- Login as root.
- Copy the VEM-4.0.0-update01.zip bundle to the host.
- Run the hotswap.sh shell script:
hotswap.sh -u
This will cause traffic to be dropped for all VMs and pnics on the switch. - Remove both Cisco bulletins on the host:
- Remove the VEM400-200911014-BG bulletin:
vem-remove -d - Remove the VIB file associated with VEM400-200909001-BG.
esxupdate -b cross_cisco-vem-v100-esx-4.0.4.1.1.28-0.7.3 remove - Reload the VEM-4.0.0-update01.zip bundle:
esxupdate -bundle VEM-4.0.0-update01.zip update
- Remove the VEM400-200911014-BG bulletin:
