Starting the vCenter Converter Import or Export wizard fails with the error: Unable to connect to Converter server

Details

  • Starting the vCenter Converter Import or Export wizard by right-clicking the virtual machine or the ESX host fails
  • You see the error:

Unable to connect to Converter server

Note: This issue occurs even if the Converter service is running and the Converter client plug-in is enabled.

Solution

The issue may occur if:
  • You stop and restart the VirtualCenter Server service while the Converter service is running. This issue occurs every time the VirtualCenter Server service is restarted.
  • The vSphere Client is idle for a long period of time and you start the Import or Export wizard in the same client session.
  • The vCenter Converter server is not installed at the server end and, therefore, the vCenter Converter Integrated Server service is not running.
To resolve this issue, close the current instance of vSphere Client and start a new one.

Also, ensure that the __VMware_Converter__ user account is a member of the Administrator group on the local machine in which it is installed. For more information, see vCenter Converter 4.2 Plugin installs but the import machine wizard fails to start (1036967).
