Understanding Unity and the Windows System Tray in Fusion 3

Symptoms

  • New Windows icons appear in the Mac's menu bar
  • The Windows System Tray is not visible in Unity
  • Unable to access the Windows System Tray
  • Unable to hide the Windows System Tray

Resolution

Fusion 3 includes a new way to view Windows System Tray icons. When launching a virtual machine in Unity view mode, if the Windows Taskbar is hidden, Fusion displays Windows System Tray icons in the Mac's menu bar. This feature helps keep you apprised of vital Windows functions when the taskbar is not visible. As in Fusion 2, the visibility of the Windows taskbar is controlled via the menu bar by clicking View > Hide Taskbar in Unity or View > Show Taskbar in Unity

These new icons can be removed from the Mac's menu bar by making the Windows taskbar visible (View > Show Taskbar in Unity), or by clicking View > Hide System Tray in Unity.

Note: Hiding both the Windows Taskbar and Windows System Tray in Unity may suppress important system alerts.
