Alert: Licensing and upgrading VMware Fusion 3.0 / VMware Workstation 7

Symptoms

  • Cannot place an upgrade order for VMware Fusion
  • Cannot place an upgrade for VMware Workstation
  • You receive an error indicating you are not eligible to upgrade

Purpose

This article provides information to common issues related to ordering and licensing Fusion 3.0 and Workstation 7.
 
Note: All technical issues related to ordering and licensing Fusion 3.0 and Workstation 7 are now resolved.

Resolution

Cannot place an upgrade order
This issue is being actively investigated and this article will be updated as soon as a resolution is identified.
 
In the mean time, you can use a 30 day trial of VMware Fusion 3 and VMware Workstation 7 while we resolve the issues many of you are encountering.
 
VMware Fusion 3:
  1. Click here to download the VMware Fusion 3 software.
  2. Use the following 30 day trial license key:

VMware Workstation 7:
  1. Click here to download the VMware Workstation 7 software for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows or 32-bit Linux or 64-bit Linux.
  2. Use the following 30 day trial license key to get you up and running:

    M142T-1034J-M8280-0KA8H-A49PC

    Note: This key works for both Windows and Linux versions of Workstation.
Excessive delay for receiving an evaluation serial number
This is a performance issue and we are working to address it. As more information is available, this article will be updated.
 
Delay for receiving an order confirmation email
If you have placed an order, you will receive your confirmation. It may take a few hours before you receive the email.
 
Serial keys for Fusion 3 and Workstation 7 are not available

Customers who purchase VMware Fusion 2 from October 1, 2009 through end of November qualify for a free downloadable upgrade to VMware Fusion 3.

  • If you bought VMware Fusion 2 from the VMware Online Store from October 1st through October 26th, there is nothing for you to do and you will receive a free downloadable VMware Fusion 3 upgrade by e-mail in the next week.
  • If you bought VMware Fusion 2 from a retail or other online store, you need to go to the VMware Fusion Technology Guarantee website, fill out the online form, and mail in or fax your proof of purchase of VMware Fusion 2. Free downloadable VMware Fusion 3 upgrades will take up two weeks to deliver after receiving a valid proof of purchase.

Customers who purchased VMware Workstation 6 from October 1, 2009 through November 30th, 2009 qualify for a free downloadable upgrade to VMware Workstation 7.

  • Customers that purchased VMware Workstation 6 from the VMware online store during this time period will be automatically sent a free electronic upgrade via email after 10/27. It may take up to 2 weeks to receive your free upgrade.
  • Customers who purchased VMware Workstation 6 through a VMware Reseller during this time period will need to fill out a form and provide proof of purchase. The free upgrade form can be found at www.vmware.com/go/freeworkstationupgrade. Customer will be sent the free upgrade via email once verified. Fulfillment will take up to 2 weeks.
Cannot access the Licensing site
This issue is now resolved. VMware will closely monitor the site.
 
Cannot upgrade to Fusion 3 and you have a VMware Fusion 2 license key
The VMware Fusion 2 license key cannot be used to license VMware Fusion 3. If you have valid Support and Subscription (SnS), you receive a free upgrade to VMware Fusion 3. If you do not have a valid SnS you have to upgrade to VMware Fusion 3.
 
Upgrading VMware Workstation academic version
Students and professors can purchase VMware Workstation at our standard academic pricing by ordering directly from the VMware Academic Store or by contacting VMware Sales at 1-877-4VMWARE (1-877-486-9273) in the United States and Canada, or +1-650-427-5000 elsewhere. You can also buy from a student store or a student union. Please note that proof of eligibility is required.
