vMotion succeeds, but reports the warning: Insufficient video RAM

Symptoms

  • vMotion completes successfully, but shows the warning:

Insufficient video RAM. The maximum resolution of the virtual machine will be limited to 1176x885 at 16 bits per pixel. To use the configured maximum resolution of 2360x1770 at 16 bits per pixel, increase the amount of video RAM allocated to this virtual machine by setting svga.vramSize="16708800" in the virtual machine's configuration file.

Resolution

This warning is reported when the virtual machine's Video RAM configuration is more than what is available to the virtual machine.

To prevent this warning, change the virtual machine's Video RAM setting to Auto-detect to ensure that only available Video RAM is given to the virtual machine.

To change the virtual machine's Video RAM setting to Auto-detect, in vCenter:
  1. Ensure VMware Tools is installed on the virtual machine. For more information, see Overview of VMware Tools (340).
  2. Shut down the virtual machine.
  3. Right-click on the virtual machine and click Edit Settings.
  4. Click the Video Card tab.
  5. Change Memory required for displays to Auto-detect video settings.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Power on the virtual machine.
