An incorrect network configuration can cause installation errors with VMware Infrastructure Client plug-ins

Symptoms

  • You cannot install VMware Update Manager Client and/or VMware Converter Enterprise Client plug-in(s) from VMware Infrastructure (VI) Client or vSphere Client
  • Installing VMware Update Manager Client and/or VMware Converter Enterprise Client plug-in(s) from VI Client or vSphere Client fails
  • You see the plug-in installation error:

Plugin Installer Error: Unable to connect to the remote server.

Resolution

This issue occurs if VMware Update Manager Server or VMware Converter Enterprise Server are in an incorrect network configuration state. When installing plug-ins (such as Update Manager Client and Converter Enterprise Client) VI Client or vSphere Client must connect and download the plug-ins from server side (for example, Update Manager Server or Converter Enterprise Server).

If the server is not configured with a valid IP address, or DNS does not contain the correct information about the server, the query attempt fails, which results in a failed installation.

Prior to installing VI Client or vSphere Client Plug-ins, ensure that the following conditions are met:
  1. On the vCenter Heartbeat Server pair:
    • The Principal (Public) network adapter is shown as first in the bind order of the Network Connections > Advanced > Advanced Settings.
    • VMware Update Manager Server and Converter Enterprise Server are correctly configured with either the Principal (Public) IP or the Fully-Qualified-Domain-Name address.

Note: If a Management IP is configured then it must not be used for server identification on the network.

  2. DNS is correctly configured with the Principal (Public) IP address for server's Fully-Qualified-Domain-Name.
  3. VMware Update Manager and Converter Enterprise Servers are reachable from the machine where the plug-in installation is attempted.
