Benign Logging for System Peripheral Devices (PCI Class Code 0x0880) on IBM x3550 Servers (10141)

Details

On IBM x3550 Servers, a warning message is logged in /var/log/vmkernel and /var/log/vmkwarning
for devices with PCI class code 0x0880 (system peripheral devices). The warning message looks simiar to:

CPU0:1024:PCI: 1655: failed for <pci_bus_address>

To determine if the device in the warning is of PCI class code 0x0880, run the following command:

lspci -H1 -M -vn | grep 0880

If the first field in the output matches the bus address from the warning message, the warning message can be safely ignored.

Solution

These warnings do not indicate a problem and are no longer logged in ESX Server 3.0.2 and higher versions.
