vNetwork Distributed Switch Proxy Switch Port Unavailable

Details

Summary

When the virtual machine cannot get a valid dvPort to connect to on a host's proxy switch, the vNetwork Distributed Switch (vDS) proxy switch port becomes unavailable.  This might occur implicitly as part of a power-on operation or explicitly if the user attempts to connect a virtual machine's ethernet device to a dvPortgroup or a dvPort on a vDS.  For a third-party vDS, this might occur implicitly as part of VMotion.

Example

If a virtual machine with vNIC mac 00:1D:09:09:9B:E9 on a vDS with UUID 74 65 73 74 00 00 00 00-00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 connects to a dvPort with key 2, and the proxy switch on that particular host cannot service the dvPort, the following error appears:

Virtual NIC with hardware address 00:1D:09:09:9B:E9 failed to connect to distributed virtual port 2 on switch 74 65 73 74 00 00 00 00-00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01. No more ports available on the host proxy switch.

Impact

The switch implementation on the host cannot service the virtual machine's network port.

Solution

Migrate the virtual machine to a different host.

If this is a vendor-specific vDS, consult the vendor documentation for this issue.
