Perfmon does not start logging when all VMware-specific counters are selected for a virtual machine performance object

Details

This is an issue on Microsoft Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 (32-bit) systems only. This problem occurs when the user performs the following actions:
  1. Open Perfmon.
  2. In the left pane, select Performance Logs and Alerts > Counter Logs.
  3. Right-click on Counter Logs and select New Log Settings.
  4. Enter a name for the new settings and click OK.
  5. In the General tab, click Add Objects.
  6. Select one of the following counter objects: VM processor or VM Memory.
  7. Click Add, then click Close.
  8. Click OK.
Notice that the log remains red, indicating that is stopped. Also, clicking the Play button fails to start the log.

The Event viewer displays the following error log:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: SysmonLog
Event Category: None
Event ID: <event_id>
Date: <date>
Time: <time>
User: N/A
Computer: <system_name>
Description: The service was unable to add any counters to the <log_name> log or alert. This log or alert will not be started.


Solution

To solve the problem:
  1. Open Perfmon.
  2. In the left pane, select Console Root > Performance Logs and Alerts > Counter Logs.
  3. Right-click on Counter Logs and select New Log Settings.
  4. Enter a name for the new settings and click OK.
  5. Click Add Counters.
  6. In the General tab, click Add Counters.
  7. Select one of the following counter objects: VM processor or VM Memory.
  8. Select All counters.
  9. Click Add, then click Close.
