Cannot connect to network after upgrading virtual hardware

Symptoms

If you have recently upgraded from ESX 3.5 to ESX 4.0, you may experience these symptoms:
  • You cannot connect virtual machines to the network after upgrading VMware Tools and virtual hardware
  • Your network adapter type (NAT) changes during an upgrade of VMware Tools

Resolution

Network adapter types (NAT) change after you upgrade VMware Tools and do not allow the virtual machine to fully reboot and register new drivers, causing your virtual machines to be unable connect to the network.

To ensure your NAT does not change after upgrading VMware Tools and virtual hardware:
  1. Upgrade VMware Tools.
  2. Completely reboot virtual machines to allow new drivers to be registered.
  3. Power off virtual machines.
  4. Perform your virtual hardware upgrades.
