Solution
Summary
When N-Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) enabled virtual machines are powered on on ESX hosts, a rescan issued from the VI Client results in an error message stating that the rescan failed, even if the rescan is successful.
Symptom
The VI Client displays error messages similar to the following:
vmware/hostd.log:1501:[2009-05-22 22:52:22.285 'HostsvcPlugin' 52358064 error] Failed to rescan all HBAs : Exec of command '/usr/sbin/esxcfg-rescan vmhba51 vmhba70 vmhba61 vmhba52 vmhba80 vmhba71 vmhba62 vmhba53 vmhba90 vmhba81 vmhba72 vmhba63 vmhba54 vmhba0 vmhba91 vmhba82 vmhba73 vmhba64 vmhba1 vmhba83 vmhba74 vmhba2 vmhba84 vmhba75 vmhba3 vmhba85 vmhba76 vmhba67 vmhba86 vmhba87 vmhba69 vmhba88 vmhba79 vmhba89' succeeded, but returned with non-zero status: 1
Deployment Considerations
None beyond the required patch bundles and reboot information listed in the table, above.
Patch Download and Installation
Note: All virtual machines on the ESX host must be either shut down or migrated using VMotion before applying the patch. A reboot of the ESX host is required after applying this patch.
See the VMware Update Manager Administration Guide for instructions on using Update Manager to download and install patches to automatically update ESX 3.5 hosts.
To update ESX 3.5 hosts when not using Update Manager, download the most recent patch bundle from http://www.vmware.com/download/vi/vi3_patches_35.html and install the bundle using esxupdate from the command line of the host. For more information, see the ESX Server 3 Patch Management Guide.
