VMotion fails in an EVC Cluster after virtual machine hardware is upgraded from version 4 to version 7
Symptoms
- After upgrading a virtual machine's virtual hardware from version 4 to version 7 on ESX 4.0 hosts in a cluster, with Enhanced VMotion Compatibility (EVC) enabled, VMotion fails
- You see the error:
Host CPU is incompatible with the virtual machine's requirements at CPUID level 0x1 register 'ecx'
Resolution
The virtual machines may have some CPU masks applied which are causing the migration difficulties.
To ensure VMotion is successful:
-
Power down the virtual machine.
-
Click the link to Edit Settings of the virtual machine.
-
Click the Options tab.
-
Select CPUID Mask under Advanced.
-
Click Advanced.
-
Click Reset All to Default.
-
Click OK.
-
Click OK again.
-
Power on the virtual machine and migrate.
