ftPerl consumes 100% CPU after enabling VMware High Availability
Symptoms
-
After enabling VMware High Availability (HA), the output of the top command on that ESX host shows that ftPerl is consuming up to 100% of CPU resources
- This issue may occur at indeterminate intervals after:
- Starting an ESX host
- Reconfiguring VMware HA
- Exiting from Maintenance Mode
- Any other action which causes VMware HA to be configured
- This issue may cause:
-
- VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) operations to take longer than usual
Note: For example, an operation that normally takes 2 hours may take up to 8 hours.
- VMotion failure
- Slow performance on the ESX host that contains the virtual machines suffering from slow backups
- VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) operations to take longer than usual
Resolution
This issue has been resolved in VirtualCenter 2.5 Update 5 and vCenter Server 4.0, which are available from the VMware Download Center.
If you cannot upgrade to VirtualCenter 2.5 Update 5 and vCenter Server 4.0, a workaround is to perform a reconfiguration of VMware HA to restart the ftPerl, which returns it to a normal resource consumption rate. It is possible that after performing this workaround, ftPerl will consume an abnormal amount of resources again in the future.
