ESX 4.0 does not use power management features on some servers

Details

Some servers with support for Enhanced Intel SpeedStep or Enhanced AMD PowerNow! power management technologies might not be able to utilize these features when running ESX 4.0.

Solution

This issue may occur if your hardware does not support these features, or if you are using an older version of ESX.

To resolve this issue:
  • Consult the documentation provided by your hardware vendor to determine if your server has these features, and ensure that your server is listed on the Web-based Hardware Compatibility Guide.

  • Upgrade ESX 4.0 to ESX 4.0 Update 1.

Earlier versions of ESX require certain optional ACPI objects (_OSC and _PDC ACPI ) to be exported by the BIOS to the operating system for supporting these features. The objects are not defined as mandatory by the ACPI specification and some hardware vendors do not have them in their BIOS implementations. When these objects are not present, ESX 4.0 does not use any power management features.
