Windows guest operating system is unable to manage new disks

Symptoms

Windows 2003 guest operating systems inconsistently manages added virtual drives. Failure occurs with disk management.
You are unable to:
  • Assign a drive letter
  • Partition
  • Format (make an NTFS file system)

Resolution

When a Windows guest operating system is manually cloned, it needs to be modified by Microsoft sysprep.
These issues occur when sysprep is run manually with the factory option. Use the reseal option.
